My fifth grade teacher always said, “A busy John is a happy John.” She knew me better than anyone I have ever known, considering she was my fifth grade teacher. She made predictions that would blow your mind. And she was right about the busy John, happy John stuff.
Here I am amazingly busy. Not hectic so much, although that happens, it’s just that I always have stuff to do. Today I actually finished as early as I have since I started teaching, with everything I had to do. I got done ironing at 8:30 pm. I taught from 8:30 to 3:20, had students after for half-an-hour or so, graded papers for another half hour, came home, changed clothes, had a snack, went back to the office to plan lessons, did that for an hour, went to make copies which took 30 minutes (change buildings, get the key, copy, staple, etc.), came home, cooked, ate and went upstairs to iron. And I was happy, happy with all the free time, to be done at 8:30.

Your mother called to tell me that I was famous today. I have been reading your blog. I always knew you were a great communicator and now a great teacher, also. I loved it! Linda McDevitt

My younger daughter, Rebecca, (your 1st cousin once removed) has a very hectic schedule at Beloit College this semester. I told her to be careful of getting sick, and she replied, “I always do better when I’m busy and have a lot to do. I don’t spend as much time partying and staying up late.” So, yes, I understand the Busy John, Happy John thing. Sounds like a great time you’re having!
